| Liquid Crunch / Music Blog | | | Featured album: Pharoah Sanders Finest | A superb collection of some of saxophonist Pharoah Sanders best works: intelligent, exploratory music, but not 'difficult' music. Highly recommended.
Between 1970 and 1995, tenor saxophone player Pharoah Sanders was recording for a number of different small independent jazz labels. One of those labels was Netherlands based, Timeless. He recorded three LP’s for the label ,“Africa”, “Moon Child” and “Welcome to Love”. Now Dopeness Galore have compiled the highlights of these records on this solid eleven track compilation.
These Timeless recordings were recorded in short periods of time, often a few days. “Moon Child” for example, was recorded in one night in 1989. Pharoah Sanders: “The night we put this album together we were all extremely exhausted. We had been touring when we arrived at this studio in Paris. The session lasted all night.”
On his Timeless debut “Africa”, Pharoah Sanders (1940), intended or not, makes a link to the past. Not only does he pay explicit tribute to his late mentor John Coltrane, he is also joined by pianist John Hicks, who was part of Sanders’ first ensemble in 1963. By that time Pharoah Sanders was living in New York, and was struggling to make a living, at times sleeping on the streets. It was joining Coltrane’s ensemble which brought Pharoah Sanders stability and wide acclaim. After Coltrane’s passing, Sanders continued to work with his wife, Alice. On “Welcome to Love”, playing a series of famous ballads, the thin, reserved approach is reminiscent of Coltrane. However, it is still marked with Pharoah's trademark sound.

Forget good music. Here's the great stuff.
There are music stores on the internet that carry hundreds of thousands - even millions of songs for you to hunt through, sort, select and download. How do you find the truly great music?
Liquid Crunch's mission is to be the best online music store on the internet. Seriously. We have no intention of trying to compete with iTunes on quantity. Your time is too valuable. We only want to put in front of you what we believe to be the most crucial releases that right-thinking souls like you should be bothering with.
Not only do we provide you some of the tastiest beats and smoothest grooves from the most interesting record labels on the planet, but we'll help you sort the truly heavy, seriously wicked tunage from the merely good.
In fact, if it's GOOD - we won't sell it to you.
It has to be take-your-head-off, rock-your-universe, brain-fryingly AMAZING for us to even stock it.
How are we doing this? Our panel of DJs, music consultants and tastemakers select the most important releases that you quite simply NEED in your collection. And we've limited them to ten releases in each category. If we find something more important for you to hear, then something has to go in order for us to add it.
That's right: there'll only ever be TEN releases in the JazzCellar, TEN DanceFloor releases, TEN HeadSpace releases, TEN for your LivingRoom and TEN in WorldWide. To get onto our list, a new record has to be replace something in our current top ten - and that's a big ask.
But what this means is that we will only sell you music that you NEED to own.
We've done most of the work... Your job is to try and choose from the incredible - and incredibly small - group of releases that we provide. But you can buy with utter confidence: Liquid Crunch music is the best of the best of the best.

New to Liquid Crunch and online as a full 320kbps mp3 download, this deep-grooving reggae workover of the classic Kraftwerk track just has to be heard to be believed. A superb addition as a late night flavour tune to add to the virtual record bag, or to throw into the iPod for a bit of head-nodding goodness on your next bus trip. Seriously tasty.
If you're new to Overproof, you'll find this track a really great introduction to the Birmingham-based collective. They're usually to be found touring the world, tearing up the stages at festivals from Germany to Australia. And failing that, you'll find them in the local cafe/record store digging deep for vinyl and spouting worldwise philosophy.
A nice bunch of guys, well deserving of a couple of quid. Grab this now -- and if you get the chance to catch these guys live, take it. | | 2008-04-16 11:23:15 | | BLOG ARCHIVE
